Rupin Pass Trek Overview

Rupin pass trek is one of the most popular treks in Garhwal Uttarakhand. It is a crossover trek that connects Garhwal with the Baspa valley of Kinnaur region in Himachal Pradesh. The trail of Rupin Pass is diverse as it offers wide range of landscape, and gradient. The trail commences from Govind National Park and passes through Oak and Fir forests, quaint villages in the river valleys on lower altitude and beautiful meadows, alpine wild flowers, waterfalls, , glacier bridges, vast snowfields on higher altitude. In addition, the trail will also make you familiar with trails of some other famous treks in this region like Kedarkantha, Har ki Dun, and Bali Pass. Rupin Pass is a moderate trek with a few tricky intersections so it is more suited for experienced trekkers but beginners with proper preparation can also successfully complete the trek with if proper guidance is provided.

Trek Itinerary

Day – 1: Dehradun to Sankri
On the first day, you will be transported to Sankri from Dehradun. During the long drive you will pass through places like Mussoorie, Nainbagh, Damta and Purola towns of Uttarakhand. After Purola, you will enjoy the attractive view of dense pine forests. After reaching Sankri you will get a splendid view of the four peaks in the Swargarohini range.
Day 2: Sankri - Dhaula–Sewa - Gosangu
Today a short drive will take you to Dhaula from Sankri. From there you will walk on a well-defined trail beside Rupin River that connects Dhaula with Sewa. After walking for a few hours you will come across a sharp turn and you will start walking towards the cliff to reach the Sewa Temple. After resting for a while at the temple ground you will continue to hike towards Gosangu. The trail there is next to the Rupin River bed. Then you will cross a small stream called Holi Gadh and then reach the Gosangu in a short while.
Day 3: Gosangu - Jhaka
Today you will continue hiking on a flat trail that connects Gosangu with Jiskun. The trail becomes a bit steep upwards after crossing Batwa and you will hike on a ridge that leads to Jiskun Village. Again you will hike on a flat trail and cross a small stream and then descend for a while. Finally a sharp ascend will take you to Jhaka village. It is the last inhabited place on the Rupin Pass trek and you will stay in the camp at the school ground in Jhaka.
Day 4: Jhaka–Saruwas Thatch
Today you will be leave the last village behind and start walking on a forest trail. Then after a sharp descent you will have to cross the gushing Rupin River and follow the trail on the right. After hiking for a while you’ll come across a verdant area called Buras Kandi, From there the trail climbs steeply and enters a Rhododendrons reach forest. Then you’ll reach Saruwas Thatch which is rich in Birch tree.
Day 5: Saruwas Thatch – Dhanteras Thatch
The trail becomes very scenic today as you will hike for a short while and cross snow bridges.After crossing a bridge you will reach a beautiful place where the Rupin River appears like a still pool of crystal clear water. From there Dhanteras Thatch is just an hour’s hike. From Dhanteras Thatch you will get sublime view of Rupin Waterfall and Rupin Valley. Dhanteras Thatch is the most picturesque campsite in the entire trek.
Day 6: Dhanteras Thatch to Upper Waterfall Top to Ratha Pheri
Today you will walk on flat meadow from Dhanteras Thatch till you reach the foot of the Rupin Waterfall. Then you will have to negotiate some tricky intersections and glacier bridges and a steep climb for a couple of hours will take to the waterfall top. During summer months, majority of the trail from Dhanteras Thatch will be covered with snow and in Autumn, you will have to traverse on boulders and a few snow bridges. The trail from Upper Waterfall Top to Rathi Pheri involves steep climbing and you will gain an altitude of 350 mt. This makes the crossing of Rupin Pass and reaching Ronti Gad Meadows on the next day less tiresome.
Day 7: Rathi Pheri to Rupin Pass to Ronti Gad Meadows
Today is the biggest day as you will cross Rupin Pass. The trek starts from Rathi Pheri and you will hike on boulders and then on vast snowfields. From there a steep climb will take you to the base of the Rupin Gully to Rupin Pass. After hard climb from the gully covered with hard slippery snow you will reach Rupin Pass. From the top of the pass you will get wonderful views of the lofty Kinner Kailash peaks and Sangla Valley. From the top of the pass you will descend sharply and traverse through snow laden boulders. Then you will hike for long hours on snow-covered slopes to reach the Ronti Gad Meadows.
Day 8: Ronti Gad Meadows – Sangla Kanda - Sangla
On the last day of the trek you will have a pleasant walk on the beautiful Ronti Gad and enjoy the sight of the green pasture flocked with herds of sheep while traversing this stretch. After walking for a few hours you’ll reach Sangla Kanda which acts as the temporary summer settlements for the villagers of Sangla valley. From there you have to hike for another hour to reach Sangla where you will cross a bridge and climb steeply to reach the heart of Sangla town.
Day 9 : Sangla to Shimla
Today you will be transported to Simla from Sangla. This long journey will take around 8 hours and you will reach Shimla in the evening.
