This Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is one of the most popular treks in Garhwal Uttarakhand. The trek starts from Gangotri and goes to Tapovan via the source of the Bhagirathi River, Gaumukh. Tapovan is a high altitude meadow known for scenic beauty as well as spiritual significance. So, the Gaumukh Tapovan Trek blends spirituality, mythology, and thrilling adventure. From the meadows of Tapovan, you’ll get breathtaking glimpses of the Shivling Peak and the Bhagirathi sisters peaks. The trek is deemed moderate and suited for experienced trekkers.

Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Dehradun to Gangotri
Today you will be transported to Gangotri from Dehradun. It will be a long journey of 8-10 hours. Upin reaching you will take rest in the hotel so that you stay fresh for the trek starting from the day after .
Day 2: Gangotri to Chirbasa
Today is your first day of the trek. Your destination for today is Chirbasa and it will take around 4 hours to reach there. The entire trail to Chirbasa is alongside the roaring Bhaigrathi River. You will be staying in the tent at the Chirbasa campsite where you will see an abundance of Chir which means pine trees.
Day 3: Chirbasa to Bhojwasa
Today you will trek to Bhojwasa which literally means home of birch trees. When you start walking on the trail after Chirbasa you will observe drastic change of landscape. You will leave tree line behind soon and the trail will appear barren. You will reach Bhojwasa in 3-4 hours and then enjoy the beautiful sunset over the spectacular Bhagirathi range of peaks.
Day 4: Bhojwasa to Tapovan via Gamukh
Today is the biggest day of the trek. The trail will continue alongside River Bhagirathi, till you get to its source, the Gaumukh glacier. After spending some time around Gaumukh you will continue hiking toward Tapovan. The trail from Gaumukh onwards is on glaciers laden with moraines. The trail from Gaumukh to Tapovan gets steeper and the view of surrounding peaks gets bigger and bigger. Tapovan meadow is bustling with many freshwater streams and a rich assortment of wildflowers during the summer months. You’ll come across herds of Bharal (blue mountain goats) strolling in the meadows. Upon reaching Tapovan you will take rest after an ardous day of trek and enjoy the stunning sight of Bhagirathi I, II, and III peaks, Meru Parvat and Mount Shivling.
Day 05: Tapovan to Bhojbasa
Today you will trek back to to Bhojbasa. Initially the hike involves steep descend but later the trail eases up once you reach the Gaumukh glacier. You will be provided with you packed lunch at the beginning of the trek and will be advised to drink as much water as possible since there won’t be any water sources in the entire trail. You’ll traverse through the rough landscape till you reach the glacier. After crossing the Gaumukh you will be hiking on relatively easier trail to reach Bjojwasa campsite.
Day 06: Bhojbasa to Gangotri
Today will be a long day as you wil hike all the back to Gangotri from Bhojwasa, however, the trail will not be very difficult as you will only have to descend gradually. During the hike you will have to cross a few streams and get to see some waterfalls as well. And the river Bhagirathi will flow alongside you again until you reach the holy town of Gangotri by evening.
Day 07: Gangotri to Dehradun
On the final day of the trek you will be heading back to Dehradun from Gangotri. This long drive will take around 8-10 hours covering a distance of approximately 280 km.
