Dhumdar Kandi Pass Expedition Overview

The Dhumdhar Kandi Pass Expedition is one of the most challenging expeditions in Garhwal Uttarakhand. The trail is long and hard but offers spectacular up close views of peaks like Swargarohini Peak, Kala Nag (Black Peak), Bandarpoonch, Garuda Peak, and many others. Dhumdhar Kandi Pass connects the sacred temples of Gangotri and Yamunotri. Due to its difficult terrain, the expedition is suitable only for those who have high level of good physical and mental stamina and experience of 2-3 high altitude treks. The trail of the Dhumdhar Kandi Pass Expedition provides varied landscape ranging from ancient villages, lush green forests, beautiful alpine meadows, serene lakes and streams, and steep ascents and descents through moraines and snow.

Expedition Itinerary

Day 1: Dehradun to Uttarkashi
On the first day you will be transferred to Uttarkashi town from Dehradun via Mussoorie. On arrival you will check in into your hotel room where you will stay overnight.
Day 2: Uttarkashi to Jhala by car and Jhala to Dorangatto
On the second day you will reach Jhala village in two and half hours by car covering a distance of 60 km. From Jhala your expedition will start. You will trek to Dorangatto today. You will reach Sian Gad in half an hour. From there you will continue to hike for three hours on a lush green meadow overlooking Jaonli and Gongotri group of peaks to reach Dorangatto campsite. Upon reaching you will be accommodated in tent where you will take stay overnight.
Day 3: Dorangatto to Kiarkoti
Today you will initially hike on a steep ascending trail for the first hour. Then the trail will climb gradually until you reach Kiarkoti. The campsite is situated in a beautiful green meadow. You will take rest in the tent after getting there and sleep overnight after dinner.
Day 4: Kiarkoti to Odar
Today you will leave the tree line behind and start hiking on the boulders. There are also a few snow patches and the trail steep in between but mostly a gradual climb to Odar campsite.
Day 5: Odar to Sirkey Thatcher
After walking for an hour you will cross the boulder zone and reach the glacier. From there you have to hike for a long period of around four hours you will reach the campsite. You need to take adequate rest after a long day on the trail.
Day 6: Sirkey Thatcher to Dharali ki Udiari via Dhumdhar Kandi Top
Today is the biggest day of your expedition. It will be a very long and strenuous day so you need to start as soon as possible. The trail is initially gradual with several humps until you reach the bottom of the pass. Then you have to rope up with the rest of the team and climb steeply to the top. From the top of Dhumdhar Kandi Pass your hardship will be rewarded with outstanding views of like Swargarohini Peak, Kala Nag (Black Peak), Bandarpoonch peaks. After spending some time on the top you will start descending. The descent is initially steep but then gradual till you reach the campsite of Dharali ki Udiari. The entire day’s hike will take around ten hours so rest nicely once you get inside your tent.
Day 7: Dharali ki Udiari to Ruinsara Lake
Your descent will continue today though the vast snow flied till the end of glacier zone. Then the hike will be gentle on the meadows till you reach the beautiful Ruinsara Lake, Your tent will be pitched by the lake from where you can see Black Peak.
Day 8: Ruinsara Lake to Dev Thatch
Today you will hike on an easy trail on the meadows along some dense forest to reach the campsite of Dev Thatch. The campsite is beautiful surrounded by forest.
Day 9: Dev Thatch to Veduka
You are getting towards the end of the expedition as you will be hiking through many villages today to reach the campsite of Veduka.
Day 10: Veduka to Sankri via Taluka
From Veduka a well marked easy trail will take you to the village of Takuka today where your trek will be complete. From Taluka you will reach Sankri village by car and stay there overnight in a village homesdtay or lodge.
Day 11: Sankri to Dehradun
From Sankri you will be transferred to Dehradun today by car. You will reach dehradun in the evening after covering a distance of around 200 km in 7-8 hours and your expedition will come to an end here.
